July 6 St. Augustine Record  "Local Harry Potter Events"

Midnight Madness at bookstore

It may be the only time this year parents allow their children to stay up past midnight.

At 12:01 a.m. July 21, the long-awaited and much-rumored seventh and final book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," will go on sale. Special activities are planned at Barnes & Noble in St. Augustine, and Books-A-Million in Ponte Vedra Beach leading up to the midnight sales event.

"We're planning some magical activities and amulet crafts, and a Bertie Bott's Beans counting contest," said Kathy Policicchio, store manager. "We'll also have wash-off tattoos, face-painting and giveaways," she said. Also represented at the community event will be the St. Augustine Alligator Farm, with an albino alligator and possibly an albino python. The St. Augustine Humane Society will also take advantage of the large public gathering by offering adoptable puppies and kittens.

The event begins at 8 p.m., but wristbands will be offered to customers who have reserved a copy of Rowling's latest. Policicchio expects hundreds in attendance, and said the store may be open as late as 2 a.m., based on previous years' events.

Miss St. Augustine Megan O'Kelly, St. Augustine Teen Kayla Loveday and St. Johns Teen Liz Stiles will be staffing the welcome table at the Barnes & Noble, according to Barbara Whitehead, Director of the Miss St. Augustine Scholarship Pageant local affiliate of the Miss America organization.

"The girls had so much fun here last year," Whitehead said.

Although bookstore staff will be dressed in Harry Potter-themed costumes, "the girls will be in their pageant costumes, complete with crowns," and probably sporting lightning bolts on their foreheads, she added.

Books-A-Million in Ponte Vedra Beach will also have a fun-filled evening planned for Harry Potter fans. The festivities begin at 9 p.m. and will include face painting, crafts and a costume contest. Exclusive Harry Potter prizes will be offered, and giveaways will be provided.
